Daniel Shanahan

Assistant Professor of Music Theory and Cognition

work in music cognition, focusing on how we perceive music and how it affects our daily lives. Specifically, I'm interested in aspects of musical transmission and change, and how we can learn a great deal about ourselves from the changes music undergoes as it is transmitted. This includes examining how working memory, physical affordances, and social relationships can influence how music changes over time.
